Router problems with multiplayer games?

ok guys here it is i go to play on steam games like garrys mod and counter strike source. so i play and play and then realize i want a server of my own. then i click create server well all is good but then i go to look on lan and BAM theres my server (right where i DONT want it to be) ive tryed everthing ive even heard that changing the ports on your router works so heres my question. im looking for full guidlines on how to change my router port i also need the port number everything and the application name, thanks.Router problems with multiplayer games?

That tells you which ones you need open and which protocol the ports need (UDP). You haven't given the info on your router, but once you log onto your router's setup page it should be easy. It will be called port forwarding or something like that.
