How to change a Serial Port to a USB port?

My computer's USB port broke down after 6 years of use. I could get it repaired and soldiered, but it costs way too much for me right now. So, I've tried looking for some sort of adapter/converter I could use to change any one of my ports (particularly my Serial) to make it a place where I can connect USB devices.

I tried looking on Newegg for %26quot;serial to USB%26quot; and %26quot;USB to serial%26quot; adapters, but none seem to be the one that makes a Serial port into one where I can plug USB devices into.

Specs:

Dell Inspiron 4150

Windows XP

These adapters look much rarer than USB to serial, but there are some at http://www.amazon.com/SIIG-US2308-9-Pin-

The USB PCI cards are much cheaper and probably a better solution for you - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLis

You can't (serial is much, much, slower than USB). Get a PCI USB controller. It's only about $20 ( http://www.bizrate.com/iocontrollers/pro ).How to change a Serial Port to a USB port?
