Parallel to communication port/converter/wire/whatever?
I have a very nice laser jet printer, and it uses a parallel port to connect to a printer (the 24 pin variety, I think), and I recently got a new laptop that only has parallel ports and USB ports on them. Now the printer has been rendered useless to me. I was wondering if any such converter exists that changes a port from the 24 pin parallel port style to the 9 pin communications port style OR USB. Or perhaps a parallel printer wire that goes to USB... If anybody knows how I can get my printer to work with my laptop, I would be greatly appreciative...

I have a laptop which is working fine , i'm running avg virus and spyware software. I use azureus as torrent downloader which works great. The issue i have is that none of the above software seems to connect - i have uninstalled both msn and windows live messenger but to no avail it won't let me connect without an xp error message. so in other words it won't work at all same with kazzaa and exeem but azureues works fine , i thought it was a firewall issue but even with the virus and firewall switched off it still doesn't work what am i missing - i have port forwarding set up on azureus could that be a problem? I would suggest that you type exactly what your error message is into Google, and you'll find some pages that will help. Probably some pages from the Microsoft Knowledgebase, and some forum posts where people have fixed this problem.
My other suggestion is to open up one of the programs that doesn't work and find the configuration or options page. Find out which ports it's using (if it's in there - you may need to check the application's help pages) and then set these up for port forwarding in your router (if you have one) and open the ports on your firewall.
I don't know which firewall you're using, but if you Google the name of your firewall and the words %26quot;open ports%26quot; then I'm sure you'll find a step-by-step guide.
If you have a router and need to set up the port forwarding for these ports, you can probably also use Google with the make/model of your router and the words %26quot;port forwarding%26quot; and perhaps %26quot;guide%26quot; to find out how to set this up.
I doubt very much there's a virus involved here. Lots of people who don't know better suggest a virus is the culprit when it's very unlikely a virus would just stop your applications connecting. It depending how dodgy your error message appears though I guess.

it does connect to the network it does buffer but it wont run the channel even after 15 minutes, sometimes out of nowhere the channels do come up after a lot of waiting, but most of the time channels won't come up , (if you're familiar with the program it might help)

whatever it is that your trying to do or let through the firewall works like this - when it hits your router and it is a port that is blocked it stops there because the routerhas no other instructions to do anything with it and that's where forwarding the the port comes in it tells the router what to do with the request that came in. If your your going to forward any ports you need to set your computers ip to a static one. If it's set to dynamic the ip could change everytime you reboot and the router can't find your computer then. So start by setting a static ip. Go to start- settings- network connections- and right click on the local area connection of your internet connection and go to properties.now scroll down to internet protocol(tcp/ip) and manually set this in the range that you have set in the router. once set then the router knows how to find your computer because it will always have the same ip. Now forwarding the ports it will usually ask which port and a destination address or ip and it should be simple now just type the port you want to forward and the ip you configured your computer to always have and you should be done. Other people that are on your network can do the same thing except they can't have the same ip as you so select something close to yours usually go in order like 192.168.0.10 then next computer 192.168.0.11 and so on then then forward that same port except the destination ip would be the ip for there computer so you could have the same port forwarded to multiple computers and everyones works. I have been using Outlook 2003 to send and receive Yahoo mail quite happily for a number of months but in the last few days I have been unable to send it. I have tried deleting the account in Outlook and setting it back up again as per the instructions on the Yahoo Mail help system, and have tried changing the port number to 587 but nothing seems to work. Issue with 2 external USB hard drives?
i run my own photography business and have 2 separate freecom external usb drives that i keep my pictures on. i plugged them in 2 days ago to find the laptop (even though windows xp gives out the connection sound) does not display then in my computer so i cant access them. no amount of restarts, change of ports helps.. i have tried on another laptop with the same result. Any help or advise would be appreciated.

I have been trying to rid our PC of a trojan virus. A few nights ago I installed and ran SuperAnti-spyware b/c I kept getting an XP pop-up for antivirus 09 that I couldn't shut down!! Yes it is possible. You need to enable internet connection sharing in your network properties. Right click on your wireless connection, get properties. Click advanced. Then enable internet connection sharing.

How do i keep my PS3 on the same IP?
Ok, i have a linksys wireless NPlus router. I know how to change the settings on it etc, but what i want to do is keep my ps3 running on the same IP. I was getting some problems and opened a few ports and now the system runs fine, however when it changes the ip it likes to use i have to change the ports that are opening to the new ip. Is there any way i can keep my ps3 on a constant IP, only allowing that device to use some ports?

On McAfee under Firewall I don檛 see anyplace I can change the Ports either. Even where it says change firewall settings. I checked all the options and none of them give me any type of choice to check or change the settings for the Ports.
Through all of this my Vonage phone still works. I just can檛 use the Internet the majority of the time. Or it will work for maybe 5 to 10 minutes (sometimes longer) and then I can檛 view any pages.How do I check my firewall settings on my computer?

I have used Azureus for a while now to download stuff (legitimate public domain stuff I might add.) Now I am at university there appears to be something blocking bittorrent use accross the network.
Whenever I try to dowload a torrent connections to peers always fail at the %26quot;Waiting for handshake%26quot; stage. I have tried dowloading better seeded torrents but it makes no difference. I have also tried changing the port bittorrent uses to see if that makes a difference, but that doesn't work either.

Why does my webcam freezes when it used to work fine on YIM?
I use my web cam on a daily basis with my gfriend. Shes on dial up, and im on DSL. It used to work fine, only freezing every now and then because of the dial up connection. But a few weeks ago, my webcam started to only works for a minute before it freezes, then after around 2 minutes my webcam unfreezes and she start getting images that where supposedly sent at least one minute ago (meaning, lots of lag).
Since the problem started, ive re installed my webcam, re installed yahoo messenger, changed usb port but the trouble persists. Her webcam works perfect, the only one with the problem is mine.
I also use the webcam to talk with my sister, but i use it on Skype and i have no problems there. Both my sister and me have broadband.
So, any ideas why is this happening? and more importantly, how to fix it?

As of this moment, my ip address on this computer ends in a .102, my PS3's ends in a .100, and the other computer ends in .101

To open port (port forwarding), you HAVE to use a static IP, just for the very reason you are seeing - DHCP can change your IP without warning - it is dynamic!

I need to replace my front USB port.
If I wiggle the plug for my headphones I can hear it trying to work but I guess it's shot. How hard is it to change this port?I need to replace my front USB port.

I bought a new Xbox 360 recently and have only recently got the wireless adapter for it. When I plug it in the red light is on and I can find my network but when I enter my WEP key the page just closes and sends me back to the basics settings menu and it says %26quot;not connected%26quot;, it doesnt even show an error message...
i have tried everything from opening ports, changing the WEP key, trying it with no internet security, mac addresses, etc. but it still has the same response of shutting the page and going back to basic settings...
Does anybody know how to fix this or do I need to send the adapter back?

Anyway, it sounds like you might need to change your wireless channel or clone your MAC address of the card in the router. Change the wireless channel to 1, 6, or 11 only.

Now I run both powerline and wireless. Powerline is as simple as plugging it in. There is no drivers or software to load. The nice thing about powerline is that it seems to be as reliable as connecting to the router as far as not going down. Also, it eliminates the bad security issues wireless has. Security can easily be enabled if you are worried about your outdoor power outlets by pressing a button.

My husband is in the Navy and we are getting ready to move to San Diego where he is stationed on the USS Nimitz and apparently the carrier will be undergoing a home port change at the end of the year.. We are looking for an apartment now but are unsure of how long to get the lease for and what my husband and I have learned is that the Navy's time line tends to be a guesstimate so we don't really know how many months to lease an apartment for.. Now I know that there is a military housing clause but does it have to be written in the lease? Do you have to pay the fees in order to break the lease if you use the military housing clause? The military clause no longer has to be written into the lease in order for it to apply. One important factor to consider is that your husband must specifically be on the lease. Why can't I find any "good games" on Modern Warfare 2?
I've tried everything I can find, but nothing seems to work. I have always had an open NAT but i still tried all of this: forwarded ports, changed DMZ, reset my modem and router multiple times, unplugged and blew on my xbox wireless adapter a la Nintendo 64... Would someone please help me!?!

I have been in the United States Navy for 2 years now.
I am first generation of Salvadorian decent, born in the United States. When my parents came to the United States one of their dreams was to raise their kids in a better educational environment that they never had in El Salvador. I am the oldest child out of 3 so graduating with a high school diploma was something my parents were really happy about. But, when it came to the next step out of high school that was when I got really confused about my future. I wanted to go to college but, I had no way of figuring out how to pay for it. I took a break for a year after graduation to figure out what I want to do with my life.
So I went in the direction of the military so I can get some leadership skills and a way for the government to pay for my college education. At first my parents didn't agree with my decision. Especially my father he didn't want me to risk my life working for the government, and he even told me one time that %26quot;I rather work in a factory for 20 years then to join the military%26quot;. My family wanted me to continue my education right out of high school and they were expecting more out of me. But, I didn't listen to them and I went in the Navy anyway. I figure I try to make my family proud since I am the very first person in my entire family history to join the military.
In the beginning everything went alright for me. But, as time came by it got to the point that maybe the military wasn't the best decision for me. Don't get me wrong. I don't regret enlisting in and I'm not saying that the military is a wrong path to follow. Sometimes I just feel like this isn't my full potential of what I want to be as an adult. Maybe not even that but, my ship (USS Carl Vinson) has been in the shipyards since 2005 and won't be making a port change to San Diego until 2010. By that time I'll be on my last year in the Navy if I decide to get out.
So I haven't really worked on my real job or done some traveling just because I will spend most of my first enlistment in the shipyards sweeping, swabing the decks and painting around the ship. Which most likely demotivates me from staying in the Navy. But, I am half way done so I will see how this second half of my enlistment goes. My parents eventually accepted the fact that I am in the military and are proud of me for it. But, I feel that this is not enough for me. I think college would have had better preparation for me. I remember I was reading an article by a military veteran saying that %26quot;military experience is nothing compared to a college degree%26quot;. But, then again maybe I wouldn't have taken college seriously because I didn't take high school that seriously either. Perhaps I would have just dropped out of college.
I have a few college courses here in the Navy. But, it's not the same as going to college full time without having work following you all the time 24/7. It's a good thing I fully paid off my GI Bill. But, I think it's just going to suck that I will be gradutating at an older age then if I were to just go to college right out of high school. Perhaps this kind of mentality will help me mature better and do better in college then just the immature kid that I was before I joined the Navy. I used to take advantage of things and took things for granted without even saying thank you before I joined the Navy. But, now that I don't have the same freedom as I used to have as a civilian. I realize just how important it is to appreciate things in life even in the small things.
I just want to know if there is anyone out there that's either in the military or prior military that can tell me if they ever regretted not going to college first and give an explanation of why or why not. I would also appreciate any motivational advise that you can give me. Having a college degree is no guarantee of having a job. If one is going to go to any school, a trade school (electrical, plumbing, etc) is the best bet. However, you can get job experience in the military that no civilian school can offer. Besides the military schools, there's hands on training. Where else can you go to school, get paid, free food, free boarding, free text books, free tutoring and pay raises?
I took college courses while on active duty (on shore and at sea) and used those credits toward my degree, which actually means squat right now. It meant squat when I got it because my job/jobs didn't require one...where I wanted to work. I just enjoyed learning.
My son went to plumbing school, apprenticed and is now 3 in a new construction plumbing company (at 38 years old) and will most likely take over the company in a couple of years when the owner retires...if he doesn't come back to the east coast and start his own business.

All USB 2.0 devices are backwards compatible to USB 1.1, 1.0 etc.

The Ip address must belong to a server which is meant to act as a proxy. If you don't want any technical nuances you can use proxy softwares instead, I use Hide-Ip-Platinum, it select the proxy for me though it's somewhat slow.

I need a little bit of help with Utorrent. a small speed error..?
First of all, my bandwidth at the moment will let uttorrent download my stuff at like 90kbs the fastest. but i got home after about a week and started up my internet and it was going pretty slow. like 20 kbs. so i looked on youtube and saw how to speed it up, i'm sure you've seen it. change the port, change this, change that. and my download went back to like 80 kbs. i was like wow that's great. :P
for whatever rason i can't remember i restarted my computer and now uttorent is going about 5kbs a second. it's bullshit.
i knwo i should portforward utorrent but no matter how long i spend on it or how hard i try, it won't ******* portforward. i mean i'm not incredibly smart on computers, but on scale from 1-10 i'm at least a 7.
i just can't portforward and i want my kbs back up to 90 kbs or higher :(

The speed of your download with UTorrent is measured by the ratio and amount of seeders and leechers. The more seeders to leechers, the faster your download will be. I'd recommend at least a 2:1 seeders to leachers ratio and having at least 50 seeders for that torrent to ensure fast downloads. yeah your best bet is to find out the IP of your router. might be
192.168.0.1 and look underneath the router for the login details login via http so open a browser and type http://192.168.0.1 and type in login details then set a port you want to forward for bittorrent/utorrent and forward it in the router. restart the router so it takes effect and it should be going faster again. btw u might also find out the IP on the bottom of the router or side.

First -- it depends on what youre working with here.
What version of Windows.
If its Windows XP or above, and you plug USB 2 device that always functions as a USB 1.1, then you have to go into your bios settings and switch it up.
I have done this -- because XP supports USB 2 devices.
So for someone to say you have to change motherboard, or hard ware is only half right -- because it depends on your operating system if it supports USB 2.
If it does you must go into your BIOS settings and adjust that, because by default your motherboard might be set to the USB 12mb/sec transfer rate, rather than the highspeed USB.

My Zune isn't loading. I think the battery and/or software is having problems. Any suggestions?
I was listening to music and the Zune said it had plenty of battery left, but suddenly it died. When I tried turning it on, it showed the loading screen and then went black. I plugged it into my computer, and it shows the loading screen, the white bar filling up, and then it goes black again. It does this repeatedly no matter how long I leave the Zune plugged in. Given that it's been plugged in for 24 hours now, the loading screen lasts longer than it did at first, yet the Zune still won't actually work. I've tried opening the software, closing the software, unplugging the Zune, changing USB ports. The computer isnt recognizing the Zune as being plugged into a USB port. How do i change my external monitor from cloning the primary to acting as a secondary display (on a laptop)?
I have an HP Pavilion xf328 with XP and a VGA-out in the back. so the laptop has the built in screen, and i have plugged in a 17%26quot; lcd to the external port. when i change the mode so it outputs to both the internal and external lcd's, it just clones the primary display, however i want to be able to use it as a secondary display so i can hook it up to a projector and use some presentation software over the secondary display, and control the program via the primary display. i looked in the display props, but it will not register as having a secondary monitor hooked up, i installed the drivers that came with the laptop and the display props do mention:

Make sure you connect your external monitor to your laptop and power it on before you power up your laptop, that will let Windows XP recognize the external monitor. Now, when you go to Display Properties-%26gt;Settings, you should see your external monitor and can set it to its native resolution (for a sharp picture). Be sure you select extending your display to the 2nd monitor.
BTW, you can drag the icon for your 2nd monitor to either the left or the right, and that will use your external to extend from the left or the right of your laptop display.

Click on Control Panel then Display then Settings. You should see two virtual monitors labeled 1 and 2. Click on 2 and then click on %26quot;Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor%26quot;. This option will be located right above Identify, Troubleshoot, and Advanced. My internet is down....How long does it take Verizon to change wires in a port?
My internet has been down for over a week and Verizon keeps saying they need to change the wires in a port at their main office. Please it can't take this long to change. I mean do i have to call them every 2 hours to check the status of the change to get this done or what? This is the most incompetent company i have ever been with.My internet is down....How long does it take Verizon to change wires in a port?

if they have not provided you service for a whole week. tell them your lawyer (not me im not a lawyer) has told you you are owed your month of fees back. assuming your account is in good standing with them, they'll grant this to shut you up and keep you from running full steam to their competition.
They are not permitted to charge you for services they have failed to provide.
One week is 25% of a billing cycle. this is beyond the %26quot;oops we messed up%26quot; limit.
A week is excessive.
