How can I tell what port something is plugged in to on my PC?

I know which item it is when I got to Device Manager%26gt;Ports however - I was told to change it from COM2 to a different COM number. Does this automatically change the port number? I mean, is it I who chooses what the Port number is or does it depend on what slot I have plugged the USB cable in to?

I don't think so you have to make changes on device manager if you are just to plug a USB cable. Your computer will just automatically find a new hardware plugged in your computer.
